A lifetime’s passion for supporting learning and practice around sexual abuse, trauma and child protection.
Career history
I began my career in the field of sexual abuse through voluntary work with women working in the sex industry who were street based.
This work was to support my masters course in Addiction and turned into a lifetimes work of a passion for supporting learning and practice around sexual abuse, trauma and child protection.
I found my love for teaching when I worked at Barnardos, who supported me to do a PGCE while I was developing their Child Sexual Exploitation service across Wales.
It soon became clear that delivering learning opportunities was my vocation and since then, I have focused on delivering dynamic training courses and workshops on subjects I feel passionate about.
Using the mind and body to learn about ourselves and others
I believe that we need to learn about how the brain and the body work together and learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse rather than waiting to be told by the victim. This is why I have trained in many body-based modalities such as yoga, breath body mind and Emotional Freedom Techniques (tapping).
I use academic theory and research as well as more embodied approaches in my teaching and supervision and I think this allows me to bring something unique and broader to the learner.
We know from neuroscience that we have reduced capacity to learn when we are stressed. In all my teaching and supervision, I focus on grounding the person / group in front of me, before we do any learning, which requires cognitive functions.
How our brains and bodies work in terms of our stress systems is something I believe we all have the right to understand and know how to manage. This is something I bring into all of my teaching.
Teaching methods
Person centered teaching approach – bespoke sessions
I studied person centred counselling early on in my career and that has framed the way I approach all of my work, from teaching to one to one support. What this means is that I focus on the needs of the individual as well as the group in a teaching situation. I consider how the needs, values and preferences of the learners will be provided and adjust all of my teaching accordingly.
No one course is the same each time I teach it, as I am always adapting to suit the individual and group needs.
I use a lot of practice tools, videos, group and individual discussions in my teaching. They are very interactive courses as I believe people learn best through a range of approaches to suit all learning styles.
